The short answer: don't. GTA 6 runs on a standard PS5, and nobody has officially said how much better it runs on a Pro. GameStop is charging $1,399.99 for used PS5 Pro consoles — $500 more than a new one. Paying that premium for performance nobody has confirmed is a gamble.
THE $1,400 USED PS5 PRO
Video Games Chronicle reports that GameStop now sells pre-owned PS5 Pro consoles for $1,399.99, compared with a new-unit price of $899.99. The change first surfaced in what a Reddit user said was an internal GameStop email. VGC quotes the memo as saying the higher price for used consoles "is intentional." VGC adds that GameStop's website listings have since confirmed the new price. TechPowerUp says GameStop hasn't commented.
Why would anyone pay it? New PS5 Pros are hard to find. VGC says GameStop had no new units in stock online. Tom's Hardware found Sony, GameStop and Target all sold out at list price, with new units listed at $1,496.01 at Best Buy and $1,554.99 at Walmart. According to TechPowerUp, the PS5 Pro launched at $699.99 in 2024, and Sony raised it to $899.99 in April, blaming memory costs.
WHAT GTA 6 ACTUALLY REQUIRES
GTA 6 is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, per Rockstar's store. PlayStation's FAQ says the game "will only be playable on PlayStation 5 consoles," and lists both the PS5 and the PS5 Pro. A standard PS5 is a fully supported way to play on day one.
There's one more detail worth knowing. According to Rockstar's store, the physical edition contains only a download code, with no disc. So a disc drive gets you nothing extra for GTA 6.
WHAT "PS5 PRO ENHANCED" DOES AND DOESN'T TELL YOU
PlayStation's listing carries a "PS5 Pro Enhanced" badge, so Rockstar has done some Pro-specific work. But the page doesn't say what that work is. Its list of PS5 features covers 3D audio, fast loading, haptics, adaptive triggers and the controller speaker. None of them is a frame rate or resolution.
Unconfirmed: In August, TechPowerUp reported that Rockstar North's Rob Nelson told Davy Jones of Flow Games the game ran at 30fps on console, and that he couldn't confirm a 60fps mode. That account is secondhand. Rockstar has not published official frame-rate or resolution figures for any console, including the Pro.
WHAT TO DO INSTEAD
- If you already own a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, you're set for November 19.
- If you're buying a console, Tom's Hardware reports standard PS5 Slim models are still at or near list price. It also suggests the Xbox Series X as an alternative.
- If you want the Pro anyway, waiting costs you nothing. Official performance details may come closer to launch, and pre-load opens November 12.
Paying $500 over list price for performance nobody has confirmed is a gamble.
