Calling, texting and hanging out

Rockstar showed IGN that you can switch between Jason and Lucia in the open world, and call or text the other at any time to have them travel to you. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier describes the other side too: playing as Jason, Lucia might call with an idea of something to do, and the pair can go to gyms or restaurants, hold hands and kiss in the street (as relayed by egw.news). IGN adds that your partner texts you during the day, for example asking you to lock up, and ignoring those texts can hurt the relationship.

In a car you can swap seats, so one drives while the other shoots.

Romance is optional

Rob Nelson told IGN the story starts with the two wanting a romantic relationship, but whether it happens is up to you. "Don't bother with it if you aren't" into it, he said (Polygon). He also told IGN there's no "particular gameplay benefit" to a romance, but nurturing it "will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out" (GameSpot). Either way, the story keeps them working together as partners in crime.

Time together builds the relationship: shopping, salons, the gym, kayaking, mini golf, or robbing stores together.

The shared wanted system and splitting up

The police build a description of you: your face, outfit and car. If a witness reports that the suspects are a couple, IGN says you can split Jason and Lucia up to divert attention, or send the other one away and take the heat yourself. Once the coast is clear, your partner texts you. Bloomberg separately reports that the wanted system takes into account whether the suspects are a couple (egw.news).

If one of them gets arrested, you see the "Busted" screen and respawn, even if the other is still escaping (IGN).

Scouting banks and robberies

Per Bloomberg (via egw.news), you can scout a bank before robbing it to decide whether it's worth it, sneak into staff areas and disable alarms. IGN says any robbery can be done solo or as a pair, and doing it together counts toward the relationship.

Cash and ATMs

Bloomberg reports that cash is meant to feel "vulnerable" (egw.news). Reported: TweakTown, summarizing YouTuber TGG's breakdown of Rockstar's preview, says there are three ways to hold money (cash on you, an ATM card, and a BuckMe bank balance) and that cash on you can be deposited or lost. Rockstar hasn't explained exactly how ATMs work or when you lose cash.

Reported, not confirmed by Rockstar

  • Hundreds of explorable interiors: reported by Bloomberg, per egw.news. We haven't seen an exact count from Rockstar.
  • A sweat system: reported as something Rockstar debated while chasing realism. We couldn't confirm it in an outlet's direct reading of Bloomberg, so treat it as unverified.
